Magnesium
Electrolysis is the most cost effective method for volume production of magnesium. A high DC current is passed through a magnesium chloride solution in a closed cell at a temperature of around 700 degrees Celsius. The chlorine gas given off by this electrolysis is recovered for reuse. The remaining magnesium can then be easily extracted. Modern magnesium process technology utilizes current approaching 350kA to achieve significant improvements in current efficiency while maintaining environmental compliance.
